In the language of the Indian Tribe that first settled in this area, Manistique means “Unamanitigong”, referring to the vermillion color of the river.  If you ask for an interpretation, most visitors will translate the name as “serenity”. As tourists have known for more than 100 years Manistique, the heart of Schoolcraft County, is a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. We welcome you to visit, to vacation, or to live in our beautiful area.

We are a family-oriented community with a high quality of life. Manistique holds a great location with a sound infrastructure on the north shore of Lake Michigan. We have a vibrant business community with local business owners and executives active in the Chamber of Commerce, The Manistique Merchants Association and the Manistique Area Tourism Council. You will also find them in civic and volunteer groups such as the Kiwanis, Rotary, Elks, VFW, Lions,  General Federation Women's Club, just to name a few.

We have our Industrial park that has residents conducting business on a global scale. Our newly built Central Park, with a walkway surrounding the limestone quarry, has a Bandshell featuring Music in the Park, June to the end of August at 7pm, on Wednesday evenings. The Farmers Market with our local farmers & crafters every Wednesday from 4pm-6pm, May to the end of October. We enjoy our boardwalk on Lake Michigan that stretches over two miles of lakeshore. We also have our newest addition of The Lake Effects Art Gallery. Ask us about all of our attractions in our area, we have plenty to see.

We will also have our brand new Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital opening this spring, located on US 2 with a beautiful view of Lake Michigan.

There is plenty of shopping, restaurants and attractions to see.....come and experience the mystique of small but mighty Manistique, Michigan/Schoolcraft County..... a place for a lifetime of memories.
