In the language of the Indian Tribe that first settled in this area, Manistique means “Unamanitigong”, referring to the vermillion color of the river. If you ask for an interpretation, most visitors will translate the name as “serenity”. As tourists have known for more than 150 years Manistique, the heart of Schoolcraft County, is a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. We welcome you to visit, to vacation, or to live in our beautiful area.
